How an Off-Grid System Actually Works
If you're new to van electrics, here's the whole thing explained simply — five steps, no jargon.
1. Harvest Power

2. Regulate Charging
MPPT Controller
A Victron SmartSolar MPPT takes the raw solar input and charges your battery as efficiently as possible — squeezing out 30% more than cheap PWM controllers.
3. Store the Energy
Lithium Battery
A Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 battery banks that power. Unlike lead-acid you can use 80–100% of it — so a 200Ah lithium bank gives nearly double the usable power of a lead-acid one.
4. Make it 240V
Inverter
A Victron inverter (or MultiPlus inverter-charger) converts the 12V battery power into 230V mains — so you can run a kettle, hairdryer, microwave, laptop charger or TV just like at home.
5. Use It 24/7
Appliances
Power flows to your 12V sockets, USB points and 230V sockets. With enough solar and battery, your van is fully self-sufficient — no hookup, no generator, no cutting trips short.

What Makes a System Truly 'Off-Grid'?
A weekend leisure battery isn't off-grid. A real off-grid setup is sized so that even on a dull winter day your battery charges enough from solar (and, for motorhomes and campervans, the alternator while driving) to keep you powered through the night, with enough capacity that a kettle, laptop charger or hairdryer doesn't flatten it. For caravans without an alternator feed, we simply over-spec the solar and battery so you still go the distance. That means lithium (not lead-acid), a properly-sized solar array, a Victron MPPT controller, a DC-DC charger for driven vehicles, and an inverter sized to your biggest appliance.

For storage we use Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 lithium batteries, and for solar we fit SNE solar panels. We're brand-neutral in our advice — we'll recommend the right spec for your usage — but we only fit brands we'd happily run in our own van.

The inverter is what turns stored 12V battery power into 230V mains. With a Victron MultiPlus inverter-charger, you also get intelligent shore-power hookup: plug into a campsite and it charges your lithium bank while pass-through powering your sockets. Unplug, and it seamlessly switches back to inverter power. That's true 240V power, 24/7 — on hookup or off it.
