What is VA?

VA (Volt-Amperes) is the apparent power in an electrical circuit. It's the product of voltage and current, without considering the phase difference.

What are Watts?

Watts represent real power - the actual power consumed by your appliances and converted into useful work (heat, light, motion, etc.).

Power Factor Explained

Power factor is the ratio of real power (Watts) to apparent power (VA). It ranges from 0 to 1, where:

  • โ€ข 1.0 = Perfect efficiency (resistive loads)
  • โ€ข 0.8 = Typical for most appliances
  • โ€ข 0.6-0.7 = Motors and inductive loads

For Campervan Systems

When sizing inverters, use a power factor of 0.8 for mixed loads. This ensures your system can handle the actual power requirements.

The Formula

Watts = VA ร— Power Factor

Real Power = Apparent Power ร— Efficiency Ratio

3000 VA ร— 0.8 = 2400 Watts

2000 VA ร— 1.0 = 2000 Watts

1500 VA ร— 0.6 = 900 Watts
