What Is Voltage Drop?

Example: Your leisure battery shows 12.5V, but lights at the far end of your van only receive 11V. That 1.5V drop is voltage drop.

Common Causes of Voltage Drop

Undersized Wiring

Using thin cables (e.g., 2.5mm²) for long runs or high-current appliances causes excessive resistance.

Poor Connections

Loose, corroded, or dirty battery terminals and connectors introduce resistance.

Long Wire Runs

The longer the distance from battery to appliance, the more voltage drop without proper cable sizing.

  4. Calculate the difference. This is your voltage drop.

Acceptable voltage drop: Less than 3% of your system voltage (0.4V for 12V systems). Anything higher needs fixing.

How to Fix Voltage Drop

1. Upgrade Your Wiring

Use the correct cable size for your run distance and current:

• Short runs (0-2m): 6mm² or larger

• Medium runs (2-5m): 10mm² or larger

• Long runs (5m+): 16mm² or larger

• Heavy loads (inverters): Use 25mm²-50mm² cables

2. Clean All Connections

Remove corrosion from battery terminals and wire connectors using:

  • Baking soda and water paste
  • Wire brush to clean oxidation
  • Dielectric grease to prevent future corrosion

3. Tighten All Terminals

Loose connections cause massive voltage drop. Ensure:

  • Battery terminals are tight (use a wrench)
  • Ring terminals are properly crimped
  • All connectors are seated firmly

4. Shorten Wire Runs

If possible, mount equipment closer to the battery to reduce cable length and voltage drop.

5. Add a Busbar or Distribution Block
