Are Flexible Solar Panels Okay to Use on My Campervan?

The honest truth about flexible solar panels - when they work, when they don't, and better alternatives

Flexible solar panels look amazing - sleek, low-profile, aerodynamic. But after installing hundreds of solar systems, we rarely recommend them anymore. Here's why: they cost more, produce less power, and die much sooner than rigid panels.

This guide will give you the honest pros and cons, explain why heat is their biggest enemy, and show you better alternatives that look almost as good but perform far better.

Our Honest Recommendation

We install rigid panels 95% of the time. Modern low-profile mounts look almost as sleek, cost half the price, last 5x longer, and produce 25% more power. Unless you have a curved roof or specific weight restrictions, rigid panels are the smarter choice.

The Heat Problem (It's Big)

This is the single biggest issue with flexible panels. When glued directly to your roof with no air gap, they get extremely hot in summer:

Temperature Impact

  • • Roof surface: 50-60°C on hot days
  • • Flexible panel: 65-75°C (no ventilation)
  • • Rigid panel: 45-55°C (air gap cooling)
  • • Each 1°C over 25°C = 0.4-0.5% power loss

Flexible Panel at 70°C

45°C over optimal = 20-25% power loss

75-80W from 100W panel

Rigid Panel at 50°C

25°C over optimal = 10-12% power loss

88-90W from 100W panel

Summer Reality

In UK summer, a 200W flexible panel system might only produce 300-350Wh per day due to heat losses. The equivalent 200W rigid system produces 450-500Wh. That's 30-35% more power from the same rated capacity.

Modern low-profile brackets (20mm) give excellent airflow, last decades longer, and produce more power for less money. Best overall choice.

Premium Flexible (ETFE)

If you absolutely need flexible panels, get ETFE-coated versions (not PET plastic). Last twice as long but still expensive per watt.

When Flexible Panels DO Make Sense

There are a few specific situations where flexible panels are genuinely the best choice:

✓ Curved Roofs

High-top conversions or vans with significant roof curve where rigid panels can't mount flat. In this case, premium ETFE flexible panels are your only option.

✓ Weight-Critical Builds

Older vans at maximum payload or vehicles that absolutely cannot add weight. Flexible panels save 5-8kg per 100W compared to rigid + mounts.

✓ Pop-Top Roofs

Some pop-top conversions need panels that sit completely flat without any raised brackets that could interfere with the lifting mechanism.

✓ Temporary/Portable Setups

For portable panels you roll out at camp, flexible panels are lightweight and don't need rigid frames. Not glued to roof so heat isn't as much of an issue.
